Studio Canuk uses ash for its indoor furniture. Hardy, relatively easily available, reasonably priced and with a beautiful grain, Ash is a versatile material for many applications. It is durable, aesthetically pleasing, and absorbs wood stains and oils well. Being one of the stronger hardwoods, Ash is a suitable choice for furniture.

Studio Canuk uses thermally modified ash for its outdoor versions where the wood is put through a specialised heating process to alter its physical and chemical properties. The process is carried out in controlled environment using heat and steam and is designed to improve the wood’s durability, weather resistance, and makes it more suitable to exterior uses. The thermal modification process has the wood heated to temperatures of between 160°C and 220°C, causing the wood to undergo a series of chemical reactions that alter its cell structure and reduce its equilibrium moisture content.

The result? Wood that is more stable and resistant
to moisture and decay than untreated wood.

Thermally modified wood has a number of advantages over other types of wood. It is less susceptible to warping, and is more resistant to insects and fungal decay. The wood, in general attains a darker color. However, thermally modified wood does become more brittle. It must be used with care and not be subjected to mechanical shocks.
